Biography

Shiyeon Sung ist eine echte Pionierin ihres Metiers: Als erster südkoreanischer Dirigentin überhaupt gelang ihr der Sprung an die Pulte international renommierter Klangkörper, darunter das Concertgebouworkest, das Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, das Los Angeles Philharmonic oder das Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. Seit 2023 ist sie Principal Guest Conductor des Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in Neuseeland.

Als sie 2007 als Assistentin zum Boston Symphony Orchestra kam, eilte ihr schon der Ruf voraus, eines der aufregendsten Nachwuchstalente der internationalen Musikszene zu sein: Kurz zuvor hatte Shiyeon Sung sowohl den Internationalen Dirigentenwettbewerb Sir Georg Solti als auch den Gustav-Mahler-Dirigentenwettbewerb in Bamberg für sich entschieden. Parallel zu ihrer dreijährigen Assistenz in Boston begann ihre Zusammenarbeit mit dem Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, dessen Saisoneröffnungskonzert sie 2007 dirigierte. 2009 richtete das Orchester eigens für sie eine Stelle als Associate Conductor ein, die sie bis 2013 bekleidete. Als Chefdirigentin konnte sie das Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra, dem sie von 2014 bis 2017 vorstand, zu internationalen Erfolgen führen. Besondere Höhepunkte waren dabei das gemeinsame Konzert beim Musikfest Berlin 2017 und die CD-Produktion für Decca mit Mahlers 5. Sinfonie. Mit dem Abschied von Gyeonggi im Januar 2018 hat Shiyeon Sung ihren Lebensmittelpunkt nach Berlin verlegt, bleibt jedoch in ihrer Heimat ein gern gesehener Gast und kehrt regelmäßig zum Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra und anderen koreanischen Orchestern zurück.

Inzwischen ist die Liste der Orchester, bei denen Shiyeon Sung zu Gast war, beachtlich. Große europäische Klangkörper wie das Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, das Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, das Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, das Philharmonia Orchestra oder das Konzerthausorchester Berlin gehören ebenso dazu wie das National Symphony Orchestra Washington, das Sydney Symphony Orchestra oder das Los Angeles Philharmonic. Daneben war sie am Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires sowie an der Stockholmer Oper zu Gast.

Die Saison 2023/24 beginnt für Shiyeon Sung beim Hollywood Bowl Festival mit einem Konzert mit dem Los Angeles Philharmonic. Nach ihrem erfolgreichen Debüt beim Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks in der musica viva-Reihe im Juli 2022 wurde sie sofort für Abonnementkonzerte im November 2023 wieder eingeladen. Nach ihrem erfolgreichen Debüt beim Royal Philharmonic Orchestra im Dezember 2022 wird sie schon im Februar 2024 wieder in fünf gemeinsamen Konzerten zu erleben sein. Außerdem wird sie ihre Debüts unter anderem beim Detroit Symphony, dem Vancouver Symphony, dem Pacific Symphony und dem Adelaide Symphony geben und Wiedereinladungen zum Seattle Symphony und dem Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife folgen. In Asien wird sie unter anderem mit dem KBS Symphony Orchestra, dem Kanagawa Philharmonic und dem Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra konzertieren.

Shiyeon Sung wurde im koreanischen Pusan geboren und gewann als Pianistin zahlreiche Preise bei Jugendwettbewerben. Ihr Dirigierhandwerk erlernte sie von 2001 bis 2006 bei Rolf Reuter an der Hochschule für Musik „Hanns Eisler“ in Berlin sowie in einem weiterführenden Studium bei Jorma Panula am Royal College of Music in Stockholm.

The South Korean conductor Shiyeon Sung is a real trailblazer of her profession. She is the first female conductor out of South Korea to make the leap to the podium of internationally renowned orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Since 2023, she has been the Auckland Philharmonia’s Principal Guest Conductor.

When she was appointed assistant conductor at the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2007, her reputation as one of the most exciting emerging talents on the international music circuit was already secure: shortly before, Shiyeon Sung had won the International Conductors’ Competition Sir Georg Solti and the Gustav Mahler Conductors’ Competition in Bamberg. During her three-year tenure in Boston, she began a close collaboration with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted their season-opening concert in 2007. In 2009, the orchestra established an associate conductor’s position especially for her, which she held until 2013. She was chief conductor of the Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra from 2014 to 2017, during which time she led the orchestra to international success. Their concert at the Musikfest Berlin 2017 and the CD production for Decca with Mahler's 5th Symphony were special highlights of her tenure. After her departure from Gyeonggi, Shiyeon Sung relocated to Berlin where she now resides, but remains a popular guest in her home country and regularly returns to the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and other Korean orchestras.

The list of orchestras that Shiyeon Sung has worked with since then is remarkable. It includes renowned European orchestras such as the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra and Konzerthaus Orchestra Berlin, as well as the National Symphony Orchestra Washington, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In addition, she appeared as guest conductor at the Teatro Colón and the Stockholm Opera.

Shiyeon Sung’s 2023/24 season kicks off at the Hollywood Bowl in a concert with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Following her successful debut with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in their musica viva series in July 2022 season, she was immediately re-invited for subscription concerts in November 2023. She will also return to the Royal Philharmonic for five concerts in February 2024 following her successful debut in December 2022. She will also make her debuts with the Detroit Symphony, the Vancouver Symphony, the Pacific Symphony and the Adelaide Symphony amongst others, and return to the Seattle Symphony and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife. In Asia, she will appear with the KBS Symphony Orchestra, Kanagawa Philharmonic and Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, among others.

Born in Pusan, South Korea, Shiyeon Sung won various prizes as a pianist in youth competitions. From 2001 to 2006, she studied orchestral conducting with Rolf Reuter at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin and continued her education with advanced conducting studies with Jorma Panula at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.
